March 2020

Cuenca, Ecuador

Ecuador was the last OS trip I made before COVID 19 closed down the world. I visited for a week after three weeks in Colombia and flew home between 6th - 8th March. The staff at Guayaqil, Bogota and Santiago airports were wearing masks!

I travelled with Hilary Green (from the old Edinburgh English-teaching days!) and we were shown around by Hilary’s son, Josh, who lives in Ecuador, and his partner Karina. It was very good for our Spanish especially as we had to report on the day’s activities over dinner every night. Our last stop was Cuenca.

The old cathedral. El Sagrario.

In 1739 La Condamine's expedition used its towers as a triangulation point to measure the shape of the earth. (Thank You ‘Lonely Planet’).
